Relationship Evolution of Patients, Providers and Caregivers
Dr. Joseph Jacobson’s piece in the Cancer Care Chronicles of JAMA Oncology illustrates how relationships between patients, physicians and family caregivers was transformed, in unexpected ways, by the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Jacobson suggests the shift that occurred reshaped how patients talk to physicians and the degree to which physicians connect with patients.
Despite being masked and physically distanced, Jacobson realized that doctors and patients grew closer and “Conversations became deeper, richer, and unencumbered…” As family caregivers were prohibited from accompanying loved ones to medical appointments and treatment, physicians connected with patients in a new way. Jacobson writes that it was a reminder “of a fundamental but easily overlooked responsibility of a physician: to be truly present with patients.”
As the COVID pandemic eventually wanes and health care delivery settles into a new normal, Patients and Providers United will continue to amplify the voices that seek to preserve the unique bond of patients and providers.
